Nathan looked out the window into the bright world, a stark contrast to the hospital he was currently imprisoned in. He had been in there so long began to ponder whether the walls were white or eggshell. Though he had more things to ponder. His bills would be sending out and they took five days to arrive, and he had two weeks to pay them or else there would be problems for him. He had nineteen days exactly to get out of the hospital before he missed his payments, which he never did. Just the thought of it made the room feel smaller and his head to throb.
He pulled his legs up, going under the blanket and settling into the very uncomfortable pillows before turning on the TV for a little peace and relaxation. Nothing good was on, in both senses of the word. Not one news story about something good and cute or any good shows were on that he could stomach to watch. Was there nothing to do in the building? He didn't even do anything that would need him to be confined to a bed or a room that just drove him insane. His wrists were hurt it's not like he couldn't just walk around for a little while. Nathan could only sigh, messing with the wire on the heart rate clip. It was ridiculous how they worried his heart would just quick working just because he's slipped up doing something he does all the time.
A knock at the door distracted him from the black hole that was his mind. He looked over to see a girl holding a tray and smiling at him. She took tiny steps inside, over to his bed and putting it down on a little table. He nodded, acknowledging he got the food they insisted on delivering. The small girl thought spoke up, "You look a little sad, are you OK?" She asked him , giving her age as older than he thought. He would have guessed a teenager but she was obviously a young adult. He shrugged, not answering her question just yet.
"Nope, making me eat hospital food tends to put me in a bad mood." Nathan joked, his tone relatively dry. The woman gave him a relaxing smile, highlighting all her best features. Her smile was pretty, it made her eyes sparkle and she seemed like a sincere person. Not like others around. They only pretended to be interested in what he had to say. Just doing their jobs. It always made him wonder if they were plotting against him, and made him send them away. Nathan wanted to minimal contact with anyone, but he could see himself spending time with this woman.
"I know it's not the best, but you know everyone seems to love the jello cups." She told him, setting the tray over his lap with a little table. Nathan sat up, poking the green blob that was known as the 'jello cup' and looked at the questionable sandwich. He sighed, glancing at the woman who was standing beside his bed and he wondered if he could keep her there for a little bit. He doubted it.
Nathan had always had a little trouble with women. He'd question their motives, even his. Were they looking for something serious, was something in his mind making him want to date them because of their bodies. It scared him, and drove others away. He just wanted someone to understand his mind though he couldn't always say what was wrong without sounding insane.
"Um, are you busy? I'd like a little company." He asked, his tone went from dry, monotone and general 'leave me alone' to quiet and hoping she'd say yes, almost a small plead. He felt pathetic, but he could almost feel his 'inner demons' grasping hold and he was supposed to be on watch because of them. Perfect excuse to keep her there.

I THINK I SHOULD KNOW HOW TO MAKE LOVE TO SOMETHING INNOCENT without leaving my fingerprints out
alex carried the tray down the hall, careful not to do anything that could mess up the food. she’d already had to go back and fix a mess like that this morning, which had put the nurses in a fairly irritable mood with her. this was her last duty of the day, bringing a meal to a guy who had been cutting himself. what was his name… eil? ned? nathan! his name was nathan.
it was the usual bland hospital food; a sandwich, with a cup of water and dessert was the only real good thing. a jell-o cup: green. she’d seen quite a few people drink the water, poke and sniff the sandwich for a second and then skip over it for the jell-o. couldn’t blame them.
she got to the room and gave the guy his food, trying to make a little casual conversation. he seemed sad and she felt bad for him, having to be stuck in a hospital. and obviously something had driven him to hurt himself that way. most people don’t just casually cut up their wrists like that.
when this nathan asked her to keep him company she was a little surprised. he didn’t seem like someone who would be interested in talking to her (or anyone right now) but she couldn’t just say no. not that she even wanted to.
alex shook her head. “i was getting ready to leave but if you like i would be happy to keep you company while you eat,” she said. “they told me your name is nathan…i’m alex.”
she seated herself in the visitor’s chair by his bed, noting how incredibly uncomfortable these things were. you’d think a hospital could make things a little more homey but maybe nice chairs just weren’t in the budget. but it was selfish to be bothered by something as insignificant as a chair, when she’d seen much less fortunate people all day.
there were a couple of cancer patients, a pregnant teenager (although she kind of brought that upon herself), a few people with broken bones. and then, of course, they had nathan. on suicide watch for a couple of days, stuck in this hospital. because that would cheer him up so well.
she eyed the scars on his wrists and shifted in her seat uncomfortably. alex didn’t like to look at things like that too much, not only did they make her feel a bit sad but she was just generally grossed out by them. at least they would probably fade…eventually. but even with the scars he was kind of cute. brown hair, not ridiculously long like some guys wore it (why, just why?). blue-gray eyes, although it was a little hard to tell with the glasses and nice lips.
“if you need anything else i could get it for you, the nurses like me. i mean, they’re a little annoyed that i dropped a breakfast tray this morning but it’s not like they hate me…i’m sorry, i’m rambling,” alex laughed before continuing. “i do that sometimes. but yeah, if you’re uncomfortable or anything you should let somebody know. and some days are better for food than others.”
alex didn’t exactly know this by experience, she hadn’t been stuck in the hospital since she was a kid and it had probably changed since then. but all the people she talked to at the hospital frequently said things like ‘i’m glad it’s monday, they have the best breakfast’ or ‘friday has a truly disgusting lunch’. either way, at least the jell-o cups were pretty good; they had been the most edible things on the tray.

Alex.
It seemed to suit her. It was simple, but when in it's full forms of Alexandria or Alexandra it was very elegant and feminine. He liked it, and offered a small smile to show her that and still smiled when she sat down. He started on his meal, poking the jello with a fork (poor little cup didn't stand a chance) and took a bit before focusing on the brunette next to him. She seemed uncomfortable , and it made him nervous. His lack of talking skills caused awkward silences between her words and his thoughts. If only he could say his thoughts , but she would run because his thoughts were focused on her appearance because he just met her and needed to know more about her before even thinking about her
Relax.
Nathan smiled again, only more of an apologetic smile but it broadened as she talked to him about the nurses she works with . This Alex girl apologized for rambling and he shrugged, "Don't apologize. It's nice someone is talking to me." He told her, taking the water in the cup and swirling it. The least they could do to make up for the lack of good food that usually graced his plate was maybe filly the cups with a little red wine. It was supposedly good for the heart and would certainly make a meal less bland than an sandwich and water. A questionable sandwich at that. Of course that wouldn't happen. Maybe he could get Mike to get him some real food. A burger sounded nice, but a non-sandwich type item would be nice too. Maybe just a simple salad.
She had gone silent again, looking around the room awkwardly. Nathan sat up more, trying to seem more lively, anything to make her comfortable and to talk to him. Though she probably found him annoying, and sickly looking. She wouldn't talk to him if they were in public, she was only doing it out of pity. Not want, and not even sympathy. His wrists started to feel like they were burning and Nathan could only sigh trying to push his worries away. They wouldn't leave, they just kept coming. They drove him insane sometimes, and caused him to hope at every 11:11 and shooting star that he would just go with the flow.
She thinks you're annoying. You can't talk to a girl like her. All the girls you get close to leave you. Why are you even thinking about her so much, she's just a helper.
He scratched at the bandages, reopening cuts gently as he scratched at his wrists trying to make the thoughts go away. She hasn't technically said he was annoying but she's probably thinking it, you're too quiet and needy. Alex was pretty though and if life (and TV) has taught him anything there were guys like him; the glasses, the pale skin and too lanky to look healthy. Then there were girls like her all sweet, a little clumsy (but she looked graceful) and leaving the guys in the dust. He was meant to be alone, not share his worries with others. No one wanted to hear.
and they never want to hear.
"You...you don't have to stay here you know? If you want to leave you can..." He offered, trailing off at the end. He could feel the sting of cuts going deeper after being reopened and stitches being tugged on slightly. It took the sting of his own thoughts away for now.

I THINK I SHOULD KNOW HOW TO MAKE LOVE TO SOMETHING INNOCENT without leaving my fingerprints out
alex frowned when he started scratching himself, reopening some of his cuts and messing up the bandages. she stood up, taking his hand. “don’t do that, you’re here to get better. why are you doing that, i want to be here and keep you company,” she said. “now, i’ll get a nurse to fix that for you because i don’t wanna mess anything up.”
there was one nearby, she was suppose to be taking care of him anyway so alex let her know about the bandages and she got right on it. after he was fixed up a little, she was allowed to go back and sit in the room with him again. she took her place in the little chair, offering him a small smile to say that it was okay, she didn’t mind being here and talking to him.
“well tell me about yourself. what do you do to have fun?” alex leaned forward in the chair, resting her chin on the palm of her hand. nathan hesitated for a second and then smiled at her, saying he liked going to the beach.
“beaches are great. I love the warmth, and the sand…and I really like swimming too,” she said, grinning. nathan smiled back and alex felt more comfortable now, just trying not to look at the scars because those made her uncomfortable if she didn’t stare at them it was just a nice conversation, though. she’d noticed that about the hospitals.
the whole blood thing freaked her out a lot, and she was slightly uncomfortable around all the disease, as much as she loved to help people. but when she was busy, it was easier to focus off that and just be a friend to the patients or help them or whatever needed to be done around the hospital. but it was selfish to be thinking about this so much.
“so if you don’t mind my asking, exactly why are you in here? you don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to but I’d like to know,” she said. the answer to her question seemed a little obvious seeing as nathan had all the cuts on his wrists, but she wanted to ask rather than just assuming he was suicidal or something.
if he was, she couldn’t imagine how sticking someone in a place like this was going to be helpful at all. everything was plain, the beds were uncomfortable, and the whole environment was just unpleasant. the food was pretty bad too. and he had these nurses watching over him in case he tried anything but how did they expect him to cheer up like this? although he probably had family or something but they weren’t here right now. poor guy.L-O-V-E’S JUST ANOTHER WORD I’LL NEVER LEARN TO PRONOUNCE HOW DO I SAY I’M SORRY cause the word is never gonna come out
